Orthodontic problems include overcrowded teeth, too much space between teeth, extra or missing teeth, and other facial or jaw irregularities. Some problems arise through habits like thumb or finger sucking, tongue thrusting, a restricted airway caused by tonsils and adenoids, mouth breathing or premature loss of primary or permanent teeth. Many of these problems affect both the alignment of your teeth and your facial appearance. It is important to note that orthodontic problems can also be hidden behind perfectly acceptable smiles. Dr Jacob will be able to diagnose existing or potential conditions that, left untreated, could impact your dental health.

Crooked or overcrowded teeth are difficult to clean and maintain, and eventually leads to gum disease, tooth decay, and premature tooth loss. Orthodontic treatment can be accomplished by several means. The most commonly known are braces and Invisalign. Other types of orthodontics are functional appliances and removable appliances. While functional appliances produce forces that correct the jaws (dental orthopedics), removable appliances and Invisalign focus their forces onto the individual teeth to correct tooth position.

With children, it is often possible to perform early intervention and correct the shape of the jaws before the eruption of the permanent teeth. With the jaws in the correct shape, the permanent teeth will often grow into the correct position or close to it requiring little or no follow-up orthodontic treatment once the permanent teeth are in place.

Surgical Orthodontics will correct jaw discrepancies that cannot be adequately treated with functional appliances, traditional brackets or Invisalign.

Braces

The dentist will ask questions about your health, conduct a clinical exam, take a digital scan of your teeth, take photos of your face and teeth, and order X-rays of the mouth and head. An appropriate treatment plan is made based on the analysis of the gathered information. If braces are indeed the solution for you, the dentist will discuss in detail the procedure with you. Braces consist of the bonding of brackets to the teeth and using wires and elastics to align teeth.

Invisalign

Invisaligns' clear braces can give you the beautiful straight teeth you’ve always wanted. Invisalign can provide dramatically improved appearance of your smile by invisibly moving teeth slowly with a series of clear aligners. Each aligner is replaced every week as the treatment progresses towards a beautiful smile. Best of all, Dr Jacob can provide you with a computerized video of your treatment showing progression from beginning to end. This enables every patient to visualize directly the anticipated result. This video, called a ClinCheck can be modified to meet your exact needs where clinically possible.

Functional Appliances

This appliance corrects jaw disharmonies by creating orthopaedic, dento-alveolar, and muscular changes. In growing patients, it is very essential that orthodontic screening be done at an early age (7-8 years) to ensure that it is not too late to correct the alignment of the jaw. They place the jaws in balance, achieve good facial muscle function and create natural facial proportions. They are available in many forms like activators, bionators, monoblocks, twin blocks, and Frankel's appliance, to name a few.
